VP Chiwenga consoles Banana family

Health and Child Care minister and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has expressed sorrow over the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding First Lady, Mrs Janet Banana.

Mrs Banana, the widow of Zimbabwe’s first President Canaan Banana, died on Thursday the 29th of July 2021 at the age of 83. She succumbed to a kidney ailment a week after being admitted to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo.

Through an official communique this afternoon, VP Chiwenga said;

“I join the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, His Excellency, Cde Dr E.D. Mnangagwa and the nation at large in conveying my deepest condolences to the Banana family.

“The nation has lost yet another gallant daughter who stood by her husband during the difficult colonial period and arduous struggle for independence. Mrs Banana was a pillar of strength, a source of inspiration and family cohesion as a mother and First Lady.

“We stand by and commiserate with the Banana family in this time of grief and beseech the Almighty to give the family strength in this difficult time. May her dear soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.

She will be accorded a state-assisted funeral.
