President Mnangagwa has said the importance of the transport sector and in particular road transport services as an enabler for economic recovery and growth cannot be overemphasised.

Under the second republic President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said his government is committed to resuscitate the public transport industry to ensure that citizens have increased mobility at a lower cost.

Officiating at the launch of the new fleet of ZUPCO buses in the capital, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said his administration’s improved public transport system will undoubtedly advance the promotion of the low emissions developments pathways, as outlined in the National Development Strategy 1.

“The importance of the transport sector and in particular road transport services as enabler for economic recovery and growth cannot be overemphasized.

“In addition, buses are critical in the reduction of air pollution as they emit less carbon monoxide, compared with smaller occupant vehicles. Hence our improved public transport system will undoubtedly advance the promotion of the low emissions development pathways, as outlined in the National Development Strategy 1, under the climate action strategy, “said President Mnangagwa.

The Head of State and government also challenged all stakeholders to work with greater coherence, collaboration and unity of purpose to enhance the public transport infrastructure design plans.

“Furthermore, the imminent modernisation and industrialisation and growth of our economy with regard to both the urban areas and rural industry systems entails that the demand for travel is set to increase, exponentially.

“I therefore challenge all stakeholders to work with greater coherence, collaboration and unity of purpose to enhance the public transport infrastructure design plans as well as the institutional, regulatory and organisational aspects of the public transport sector,” said President Mnangagwa.

Today’s commissioning of an additional 50 buses brings to a total of 212 buses purchased by ZUPCO under the new dispensation.
